Sexual Health After 40: What Changes, What’s Normal, and How it affects your Lifestyle

For many women, turning 40 brings a deeper sense of self, confidence, and clarity, but it can also bring changes no one really prepares us for, especially when it comes to sexual and vaginal health.

If you’ve noticed vaginal dryness, changes in odor, recurring infections, or a shift in libido, you’re not alone, and more importantly, nothing is “wrong” with you. These changes are common, biologically driven, and very manageable with the right knowledge and care.

As a women’s health nurse practitioner for several years and the founder of Vagesty, I spend a lot of time helping women unlearn shame and relearn how to care for their bodies during this stage of life. Let’s talk about what’s really happening after 40 and what you can do about it.

Why Sexual Health Changes After 40

After 40, many women enter perimenopause, the transitional phase before menopause. During this time, estrogen levels begin to fluctuate and eventually decline. Estrogen plays a major role in:

· Vaginal lubrication

· Maintaining healthy vaginal pH

· Supporting good bacteria (lactobacilli)

· Elasticity and tissue strength

When estrogen drops, the vaginal environment becomes more vulnerable. This can lead to:

· Vaginal dryness or discomfort during sex

· Changes in odor

· Recurrent BV or yeast infections

· Burning or irritation

· Lower libido due to discomfort or confidence issues

These changes are physiological, not a personal failure—and they deserve real solutions, not silence.

Redefining Sexual Wellness After 40

Sexual health after 40 isn’t about “getting your old body back.” It’s about understanding your current body and giving it what it needs now.

That may look like:

· Prioritizing comfort and pH balance

· Using products designed for mature vaginal tissue

· Rebuilding confidence after recurrent infections

· Having honest conversations with healthcare providers

Annterria believes feminine care should be clinically informed, gentle, and empowering, not embarrassing or reactive. Women deserve products and education that respect their bodies at every stage.

L.A.B perspective: Advocate for your body,You’re Evolving

If there’s one thing I want women over 40 to know, it’s this:

Your body is changing, not failing.

With the right knowledge, preventative care, and support, sexual health after 40 can be comfortable, confident, and deeply fulfilling.

And the conversation starts with understanding—not shame.
